Accessible summer camp on Langeoog: crossing the dunes with the TRAIL-MATE

Barrierefreies Zeltlager auf Langeoog: mit TRAIL-MATE über die Düne

Over the dune to the water – together instead of being carried. At the Langeoog Adventure Camp – the Sportjugend Niedersachsen summer camp – groups with wheelchair users can now reach the beach independently. This is made possible by a mobile path made of TRAIL-MATE track panels, which the Lower Saxony State Sports Confederation (Landessportbund Niedersachsen) purchased and provided to the camp in 2024.

A pilot project for an accessible summer camp

The goal for Langeoog is to create an accessible summer camp where all groups – with and without disabilities – can vacation together. The mobile beach path is a pilot project on this journey: instead of laboriously carrying wheelchairs over sand and dunes, everyone can roll together right up to the sea.

For this project, 20 TRAIL-MATE CLASSIC panels were delivered, resulting in a path of around 18 meters. The panels are not installed permanently; instead, they are laid out as needed: groups at the camp can borrow them and use them wherever they are needed.

What the groups are saying

"Amazing – now we can finally get up the dune and down to the water with our wheelchair users without having to carry them over the sand."

"On group trips, everyone is now truly on the beach – fully integrated. A great product."

Why TRAIL-MATE works on the island

  • Lightweight and flexible: Each CLASSIC panel weighs only 2 kg, is foldable, and can be carried by one person – ideal for island logistics.
  • Quick to install: The panels are connected with Velcro, requiring no tools. In sand, the TRAIL-MATE PINS 40 cm hold the path securely in place.
  • Robust: UV and saltwater resistant and can support up to 3.5 tons – also suitable for handcarts, beach wheelchairs, or emergency vehicles.
  • Space-saving storage: After use, the panels are folded up and stored until the next group arrives.

Groups staying at the Langeoog Adventure Camp can request the track panels directly from the camp as needed. The on-site contact person is Karsten Pümpel.
